Assessment before teaching.
Most tutoring begins with the chapter the student is currently failing. That is almost never where the problem is, which is why so much tutoring produces a better week and no better year.

01 / Diagnosis
We find the earliest insecure topic, not the current one
A calculus student is usually losing marks to algebra learned badly years earlier. A child struggling with long division is often missing place value. We write down where the ground actually gives way, and we revisit that finding every six weeks and rewrite it when it is wrong.

02 / One to one
One tutor, one student, the same chair
No group sessions and no rotating staff. Mathematics is learned in a relationship with somebody who remembers what you got wrong last month, and a student who is embarrassed will not ask a question in front of four others.

Behind and ahead are the same instrument
Roughly half our work is repair and half is extension — competition preparation, university courses, qualifying exams. The diagnostic does not change. Only the depth of the buried topic does.
Who teaches
Mitchell Wyatt
Chief Mathematician
Mitchell holds a PhD in applied mathematics from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he also taught undergraduate mathematics, calculus among it. He works as an analyst at Spero Risk Associates — which is to say he uses this mathematics on weekdays, rather than only teaching it. Applied is the operative word: the discipline is about where mathematics actually lands, which is the same question a struggling student is really asking.
That university teaching is the reason the clinic works the way it does. First-year calculus is where a decade of small gaps finally becomes visible, and standing in front of that course teaches you to recognise the shape of the damage years before it surfaces.
Every written assessment is his. Postgraduate and competition work he takes personally. A tutor may deliver the weekly hour, but the finding they work from is not theirs to write. That is the part the clinic does not delegate, because it is the part everything else depends on.
What we will not do
We do not promise a grade.
No tutor can, and one who does is selling something else. We will tell you what we found, what we are working on, and whether it is moving. If it is not moving, we will say that too.
We do not complete homework and we do not sit examinations. We do not take a student we cannot help — if the difficulty is not mathematical, or another kind of support would do more, we will say so at the consultation and tell you what we would do instead.
